Propellers

A propeller is a propeller, right? Not exactly. There are a variety of options that you have when it comes to boat propellers and the importance of choosing the right one is more serious than you might think. Size, power, shape, and design all matter when you purchase propellers, and not considering these things will definitely ensure that you won't get what you need or might choose the wrong propellers for your needs. Propellers aren't as simple as some people might think them to be, but they also don't have to be overly complicated, as long as you take the time to learn about them and what they have to offer you.

Propellers come in a variety of sizes. Although it might seem obvious, the one that suits your boat will be relative to the size of your boat. However, it should also be considered in relation to the size of your engine. For example, if you've got a 25 foot boat with an engine made for smaller vessels, you'll likely want a smaller propeller so that the engine can handle it. Likewise, if you have a small boat, but a slightly larger motor or different style of motor, this will be more important than the actual boat itself. However, it's still basically relative, which is why you should take the time to check out your options.

You can sometimes find propellers that come as a part of boat motors, but not always. Boat retailers and dealers like to sell all the parts separately, not only because they can make a little more money, but also because everyone's exact needs are different, and no two boaters will be looking for the exact same boat with the exact same motor and propeller. Giving you that option to make your own decisions is a nice benefit that you get with boat ownership. When you buy a car or other vehicle, the engine comes standard, as does all of the other working parts. However, when those parts break, you do have choices as to which parts you'll use for replacement.

The same is true for boat motors. There is no shortage of propeller options to choose from, and you shouldn't limit yourself just because you are ill-informed or because a dealer or salesman tells you that certain propellers are better than others. By taking the time to educate yourself, you can often choose your own propellers without the help of salespeople or dealers, which is very good. There are a lot of reputable dealers out there, but there are also plenty who will try to sell you things that you don't need or that don't fit with the boat that you're buying just because they'll make more money on the deal. Be cautious and informed, and finding the propellers you need will be easy.
