Boat Safety- Disaster Preparedness

When you become a boat owner, you become the keeper of the lives of everyone that sets foot on your vessel. This might seem like a huge responsibility, but you can really alleviate a lot of stress and worry by doing just two things: being informed and being prepared. If you take the time to learn about boat safety and prepare yourself for anything when you first purchase your boat, you'll allow yourself to enjoy the experience of boating even more in the end. It might seem like it is tedious work, but when you think about all the things that you can prevent with a little education and preparation, you'll realize that it's worth it.

One part of being prepared is making sure that you're ready in the event that disaster strikes while you're at sea. It doesn't matter if that disaster is natural, or if someone gets hurt, ill, or falls overboard. You should have the proper tools and contact information on board so that you're ready for anything. A good first aid kit and the number for the local coast guard is essential, as is extra food and water in the event that you're ever stranded due to a breakdown or a storm. Water is especially important when you're on the ocean, because drinking the ocean saltwater will only dehydrate your body faster.

You should also keep a battery operated weather radio on board, as well as a few flashlights and a flare gun. Matches and candles can be helpful, as well. A flare gun is a great idea that many people don't think of, but it can help you to find other vessels when you have no other way of communicating or sending out a mayday. Making sure that you're prepared for the worst case scenario will ensure that you'll enjoy your boating much more, and avoid a lot of problems that you might have had without the proper preparation.

Boating is all about enjoying yourself. Taking the time to get to know your boat and make sure that it is fully stocked for any incidents will help you to be able to have a good time in the end. If you truly want to be the most responsible boater that you can be, these things are necessary for you to do. It doesn't matter if you've got a large yacht, a small fishing boat, or anything in between. Being prepared and ready for anything is essential to every boater and every type of boating experience.
