Boat Safety- Weather Preparedness

One of the biggest precautions that you need to take when it comes to boat safety is being prepared for anything, including inclement weather. Even if you set sail on the most gorgeous day possible, the weather on the water can change in an instant, leaving you vulnerable and risking your chances at making it to shore safely. In these situations, you might have to wait out the storm. Being prepared for this can save you a lot of worry because you'll have everything you need on board, allowing you a better chance at making through a storm than those who aren't prepared.

You obviously need to have the right life preservers and safety rafts for emergency bailouts and if you have to abandon ship. This is pretty standard information. However, there are other things that you should have on board your boat to make sure that you're fully prepared for any weather situation that could occur. Having extra food and water on board is always a good idea, in case you get stranded for a length of time. Also, having a battery operated radio, a flashlight or two, and a flare gun is important. These things can keep you connected when and if you lose power, allowing you to feel safer and more secure than if you didn't have them. And if a storm damages your boat, a flare gun is a great way to alert other vessels in the area that you need help if you can't call for a mayday. Having a pair of slip resistant shoes on board is a good idea as well, because if you experience swells, big waves, or heavy rains, your boat will become a floating slip and slide.

It doesn't matter if you're sailing or fishing, or if you're on the Atlantic Ocean, in the Gulf, or on the Pacific Ocean. Weather happens everywhere, and fronts travel much faster over water than land, making you completely vulnerable every time that you leave the dock. That's why you need to be prepared, so that you don't suffer unnecessarily during a storm or bad weather if you don't have to.

Boat safety is the first thing that you need to learn when you become a boat owner. Aside from basic rules of the water and safety precautions, you should also be prepared for weather and other situations to maximize your enjoyment of boating. Imagine if you were out on the seas and found out that a storm was coming faster than you could get back to land. Wouldn't you feel better if you had the proper tools on board to protect yourself and your family? Although it might seem tedious and boring, take the time to learn and prepare yourself. You'll enjoy boating much more if you're ready for anything, because you'll have no worries.
