Boat Safety- License Requirements

Boat licenses aren't the same as driver's licenses. First of all, most states don't require boat owners to have an actual boat license, but only to complete certain boating courses and have certification to verify that they passed the courses that are required. You don't have to take the time to get an actual license if you don't want to, unless your state requires it. However, the more education you have on boating, the safer your boating experiences will be. Additionally, you can save money on your boat insurance by being more educated, so there's no harm in taking too many classes.

The only states that require the passing of an actual licensing exam to be a legal boat operator are few and far between. You can check out various sites to find information on your state's specific requirements. You can even find information on fees that you'll have to pay, as well as your renewal options for your registration. Some states allow you to renew your registration online, while others may still require you to renew your registration in person or by mail. Most often, you can find this information out very simply, by researching each individual state that you'll be boating in.

It doesn't matter where you live, really, unless you'll be operating your boat in your home state. The location where your boat will be operated is more important to the officials. Also, it's important to note that most states allow the parks and recreation departments to handle boat licensing, registration, and records. You might find a few states that allow these processes to be handled by the DMV, but these are not very common. There are so many different rules to know about boat licensing and registration, that it's essential for you to search by state for all of your boating needs.

If you're going to be using your boat on the Great Lakes, but you live in Kentucky, you need to check with both states to see who requires you to register with them. Some states will require you to have a registration on file even if you don't operate the boat in that state, just because you live there. Others will just require you to register the boat where it will be used. Knowing how to properly license yourself and register your boat will be essential to your enjoyment of boating.
