All the Wrong Reasons to Buy a Boat
There are hundreds upon hundreds of various reasons that people buy boats. Unless you have unlimited funds, though, there are many reasons that you SHOULDN'T buy a boat. That may sound absurd, but when it comes to something that is completely unnecessary and yet so expensive, you had better have good reason if you're not rich beyond your wildest dreams. For those living on a budget who are pondering a boat purchase, here are some things to keep in mind.
You shouldn't buy a boat just because you can. If you have no vested interest in boating, fishing, or any related areas, it's a complete waste of money. Even if you ARE incredibly financially endowed, it's still a waste. You also shouldn't buy a boat if you're only going to use it once or twice a year. You can rent one cheaper, and save yourself the storage and docking fees, which can be astronomical in some places. If you're buying a boat because you want to prove yourself to friends, family, or colleagues, don't. Having money is good, but spending thousands of dollars on a boat just to show off isn't really worth it.
There are many great reasons that you SHOULD purchase a boat, so don't get discouraged. If you're into fishing, sailing, or water sports, owning a boat is a good investment. Also, if you have the money to afford one, and will use it on a regular basis, then you're in the right position to justify purchasing a boat. You might feel like you shouldn't have to justify yourself, but when you're spending that much money on something, it's a good idea that it serves a purpose and has a reason for being bought in the first place. Someone who lives on the lake or ocean year round has much more use for a boat than someone who only visits the water once or twice a year.
Take a minute to remind yourself of why you're interested in buying a boat. Chances are that you're a water enthusiast of some sort, and that you've budgeted money to spend on this treat for yourself. If that's the case, make sure you're informed and then go for it. If you're contemplating purchasing a boat just because it seems like a good idea, or with the intention of only using it once or twice a year, you might want to rethink your decision. As long as you take the time to inform and prepare yourself, including knowing why you're buying a boat and that you'll make the most of it, you'll be ready for boat shopping in no time.
