Boat Shopping 101- Which Boat is Right for Me
You've finally moved to the lake, set all your cares aside, and are ready to get out on the water and enjoy boating for the rest of retirement. Or maybe you've relocated to a costal town and are looking to set sail on the deep blue sea. No matter where you are or why you've decided to take up boating, you have everything in order. All you need is a boat. How do you know which one to choose? There are many different elements to consider when you buy a boat to make sure that you choose the right one for your needs. Narrowing down your choices by a few basic criteria can help.
Cost- If you've got a budget, that will come first. What is your budget based on? Did you get a pre-approved loan amount from a lender, allowing you to only spend so much money, or are you just well aware of what you can afford, and are basing your budget on that? Either way, you need to make sure that if cost is an issue, you narrow down your choices by ruling out the boats you can't afford first.
Purpose- Another important consideration. If you're looking for a pleasure cruising vessel, it's likely that you'd choose a yacht or a powerboat. For fishing, you'd obviously want a fishing boat, and so on. If you don't buy a boat for the right purpose, it will be a waste of money.
Size- Once you've ruled out boats you don't need and boats you can't afford, you need to then choose the size of boat you want. Fishing alone on the lake on occasion? It's likely that a smaller boat would serve your needs just fine. If you're heading out sailing on the seas with 10 friends, though, you might want to consider a bigger boat.
All of these elements are important to consider when buying a boat. Once you've taken care of the necessary elements, then you should have many fewer options to choose from. The final decision will depend on your personal preferences for style, design, and layout of the boats in question, so be prepared to know what you like. If you've never been to a boat dealership, the options can be overwhelming. However, as long as you're able to eliminate the ones that don't suit you, you'll have many fewer boats to choose from in the end.
