Although it might seem like a silly concept, pirates are real, and they do still exist out there in the open water. You're not likely to have a problem on your local lakes and rivers, but if you venture out into the open seas, you might actually encounter criminals and thieves that steal boats, burglarize them, and cause other damages to your vessel. Knowing how to be prepared for the rare chance that this happens can help you to save your life and the lives of your passengers, as well as how to avoid becoming a victim at all.

Boating safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to your enjoyment of boating. You need to take the time to learn the rules of the water, and if you're sailing or cruising the open seas, you need to know what threats you face and how to avoid them or protect yourself from them. Being an informed boater is the best way to make the most of enjoyable boating and having a safe, fun time on the water. Although it might seem like a ridiculous idea, you still need to expect the best, but be prepared for the worst, and understand that pirates can still be a real threat if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time.
