Boating Boundaries

Boating Boundaries

If you boat on lakes and rivers within the United States, knowing your boundaries won't be a big issue. However, if you boat in the Great Lakes, or any of the oceans or seas, you need to know what the international boundaries are, because you can get into serious trouble for crossing into international waters without explicit permission. Whether you're just going for a cruise or if you're taking a fishing trip, you have no reason to be in international waters, and you'll need to find out how to avoid them so that you don't get into trouble.

Whether you accidentally go into international waters because you weren't informed, or if you are just exploring and want to check it out, you need to turn around immediately, so that you don't get into trouble. Even if it's just a silly misunderstanding, you might not be treated very good by the people that catch you because of all the people that blame their being in those waters on an accident. Make sure that you know your limits.

You should also know certain restrictions for other types of vehicles and where you can and can't use certain boats and watercraft. For example, you can only use Waverunners and Jet Skis in certain areas on oceans and beaches, and boats aren't allowed too far inland in many cases. Also, the rules will vary depending on what type of water you're boating or enjoying water sports in. There are also speed limits to consider, and restrictions about times that certain crafts can be used. Taking the time to learn these things will often make the difference between enjoyable boating and having constant problems.

Boundaries are really important, though, so you need to make sure that you take the time to know them and how they will affect you. Most boating education courses teach these things to you, but you might need further instruction about certain restrictions. If you ever get pulled over for using watercraft in an area where you're not supposed to, most officials will just tell you that you need to be in a different area, because they'd rather inform you than write you a ticket. International boundaries are the most important thing to keep in mind, so you need to make sure that you don't cross them if you're boating in certain areas.
