Boat Docks and Marinas
Finding a home for your boat once you buy it is almost as important as buying the right boat in the first place. You need to make sure that you take the time to research all the available marinas and boat docks in the area so that you can ensure you're getting the best one for your money. You will be required to pay docking fees for using these harbors as a home for your boat, but you can usually find affordable places to keep your boat so that you don't spend a fortune on docking fees.
If you plan on traveling back and forth a lot, having a dock might not be as much of a priority since you won't be staying put for long. However, if you live close to the water or if you frequent an area that has decent weather for most of the year, you might want to find a place to dock your boat so that it doesn't have to be transported back and forth every time that you want to use it. There are more docks in bigger towns and cities, and fewer docks in smaller towns, obviously based on the need of the community. Whereas you'll find hundreds of marinas and boat docks in Miami, Florida, you might only find a handful of places to rent dock space on Lake Michigan.
It's all really a matter of need when it comes to boat docks and marinas. Many people buy trailers and transport their boats back and forth a few times a year to their favorite spot. For them, having a dock isn't a necessity. You should never pay dock fees unless you spend more than 40% of the year on your boat. Then, you'll be better able to make sense of spending the money on dock fees that you might not need to spend if you only use your boat a few times a year.
There are many different docks and marinas to choose from, no matter where you look. You'll need to take the time to look around and research all the different choices that you have. By looking for docks and marinas that are nice, you'll be able to lower your risk of being a victim of vandalism, burglary, or theft, but you might pay a little more. However, for the peace of mind you'll get, it's nice to know that your boat is safe, even if it does cost you a little more money.
