Be an Informed Consumer before Purchasing a Boat

New Page 1

When you decide to purchase a boat, you need to take the time to research all of your options beforehand so that you’re prepared for what’s to come. If you wouldn’t buy a car without researching prices and different vehicles first, why would you treat boat shopping any different? You’ll be making a bigger investment, which means that you need to be even more educated than when you purchase a car. Also, cars are more common than boats, so it’s easier to find information and know what you need to than with a boat. You might have to buy books, videos, or talk in-depth with other boat owners and dealers to make sure that you’re on the right track with your boat purchase.

You need to first set a budget and make sure that you can afford to invest in a boat. After all, what good is it to go boat shopping and get your hopes up, only to find out that you can’t actually afford to purchase a boat? Once you’ve determined how much you can afford to spend, you should immediately research boat loan lenders and different financing options to find the one that best suits your needs. Then, you need to apply for loans so that you’re pre-approved when it comes time to actually go shopping, so that you can have that leverage when negotiating with the dealer. Boat sales are like car sales; you never pay the price on the sticker.

Once you’ve got the financial aspect of buying a boat under control, you need to consider where you’ll use your boat, as well as what your boat will be used for. Whether you want a fishing boat, a speedboat, a yacht, or other personal watercraft, you need to know this before you start shopping. That way, you can eliminate a lot of your options because they’re not the type of boat that you need for your intentions. For example, if you’re looking for a small fishing boat for the lake, you wouldn’t buy an ocean-worthy luxury fishing boat, and vice versa.

Being an informed consumer is essential to your boat shopping success. You cannot buy a boat without researching and knowing what you want, as well as what you’re getting into. Unless you can afford to pay more than you should, or take a chance on a boat without researching different styles and types, you need to learn about boats before you buy.
