Sailing Safety When you become a boat owner, part of your responsibility is to make sure that you and everyone around you is safe on the water. Another important part of sailing safety is to know your vessel. You should take the time before you set sail to get to know your boat, including all of its parts and operating devices. That way, in the event that you ever have a problem or something breaks down, you’ll know where it’s located and how to fix it, or at least which part you need to order so that you can get it fixed. It’s all a matter of educating yourself and being informed about what you’re getting into. Unlike owning a car, you can’t not know things about your boat and just expect the dealer or repair shop to take care of everything for you. It doesn’t work that way; a boat is an investment that you need to give 100% of your attention to. Nothing about your boat should be a mystery to you.
